Description
After beginning his career with the American mining company Amax in Denver (Colorado), Jean-Pierre FARANDOU joined the SNCF in 1981. He then worked in all transport trades - switchman, train driver, regulator - and went through all operational management levels. He launched three TGV lines: Paris-Lille in 1993 as project manager, Thalys in 1996 as Managing Director of Thalys International, and the TGV Méditerranée in 2001 as Deputy Director Main Lines. He then headed the SNCF Rhône-Alpes region and then took up the position of Managing Director of Keolis Lyon, operator of Lyon's buses, metros and trams. Jean-Pierre FARANDOU also held the position of Director of HR Executives from 1998 to 2000. On this occasion, in 2017, he received the Humania Circle Grand Prize, which rewards an HRD who has become President.
From 2006, within the executive committee of the SNCF, he created and managed the SNCF Proximités branch, bringing together Transilien, TER, Intercités and the Keolis-Effia Group. In 2012, he was appointed Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the SNCF group then became Chairman of the Management Board of Keolis, a specialist in urban transport, a chairmanship he held for seven years.
As Chairman and CEO of SNCF, Jean-Pierre FARANDOU intends, with his management team, to deploy the strategy of the public company around the development of rail in France. It positions the SNCF group as the world leader in sustainable passenger and freight mobility by 2030; thus making it a key player in the response to be made to societal challenges such as the climate and environmental emergency, as well as the priority of regional development, even as the company takes up the challenge of completely opening up the market to competition. To achieve its ambition, the group invests in its four main areas: people, ecological transition, territories and innovation / digital, all oriented towards the customer and the employee. The Tous SNCF corporate project, co-constructed by the companies, activities and establishments, was built in 2020 with all employees.
In parallel with his activities within the SNCF Group, Jean-Pierre FARANDOU was Chairman of the GIE Objectif transport public (2013-2015) and of the Union des transports publics et chemins (2014-2017). He also chaired the Orchester national d'Île-de-France (2012-2014) and the Center Jacques Cartier foundation (2018-2019). He has also been a member of the Orientation Council of the Institut de l'Entreprise since 2021, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Impact France movement as well as President of Fer de France since 2023.
Jean-Pierre FARANDOU is an engineer from the Mines de Paris and an officer of the Legion of Honor.
