Description
Valérie Masson-Delmotte is co-chair of Working Group I (climate physics) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for the sixth round of assessment, and director of climate science research at the Laboratory of Climate and Environmental Sciences (LSCE) of the Pierre Simon Laplace Institute, University of Paris Saclay.
After training as an engineer (Ecole Centrale Paris) and a PhD in fluid physics, she conducted research on the quantification and understanding of past climate variability and the water cycle, climate information from ice cores, climate response to natural and anthropogenic forcings, climate feedbacks, abrupt climate change, ice caps and sea level. With 250 scientific publications, she is one of the most cited scientists in the field of geosciences since 2014.
She is extremely active in the field of popularization and science communication and has contributed to several books on climate change for children and the general public. Her scientific contributions have been recognized by several prestigious awards, such as the European Commission's Descartes Prize in 2008 for the EPICA project, the Irène Joliot-Curie Prize as a Woman Scientist of the Year 2013, the Martha T Prize. Muse for Antarctic Science in 2015, the Nature's 10 Prize in 2018, the CNRS Silver Medal in 2019, the Milankovicz Medal of the European Union of Geophysics in 2020 and the Medal of the President of the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research in 2020.
